RIDING ON THOSE EAGLES' WINGS

RIDING ON THOSE EAGLES’ WINGS

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31)

There is so much good stuff in the Old Testament.  There is so much good stuff in the book of Isaiah!  People who try to make distinctions between “the Old Testament God” and “the New Testament God” must forget about passages like this one.

Scholars believe that these words came to the people of Judah after they had been sent into exile in Babylon.  Well, what good news to hear!  God is reassuring them.  They should keep the faith in the One who created “the ends of the earth.” (verse 28)  This God does not faint or grow weary, and his understanding is unsearchable. (verse 29) This God has the power to bring them back home and restore their fortunes, and will do so.  God cares about them!

Remember when you were a child and your parents would get ahead of you and you would shout out, “Wait for me! Wait for me!”? Well, sometimes God is shouting the same thing to us.  “Wait for me!  Don’t go off in pursuit of your half-baked plans without me! Connect to Wisdom!  Connect to the true Source of power!  Connect to Love!  Wait for me!”

Verses 29-31 are flat-out lovely and inspiring, aren’t they?  They should inspire a song or two.  (Oh wait, they have...)

“He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; [Have you ever seen a young child hit the wall and conk out, wherever they happen to be in the moment?  Yeah, me too.] ... but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

Are you feeling a little weary or powerless today?  How about tapping into the true Source of power - the Source that made all universes, the Source that is Love.

How might it feel to run through life and not be weary?  How might it feel to walk and never faint?  How might it feel to fly?

There is only one way to find out.

Wait for the Lord.
